PROPOSED RESOLUTION
CELEBRATING NATIONAL NEWSPAPER WEEK 2018
WHEREAS, National Newspaper Week 2018 is from October 7th to the13th; and
WHEREAS, this year’s theme for National Newspaper Week is “Journalism matters now more than ever;” and
WHEREAS, this 78th annual National Newspaper Week is a recognition of the service of newspapers and their employees across North America, and is sponsored by Newspaper Association Managers; and
WHEREAS, newspapers are a primary source of contemporary history; and
WHEREAS, a free and unfettered press is guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution; and
WHEREAS, a free press has been under attack at the highest levels of national government, including calling the press an “enemy of the people;” and
WHEREAS, Cook County residents can celebrate National Newspaper Week by understanding and supporting the role newspapers play in our communities and, importantly, in our democracy; and
WHEREAS, local media can celebrate National Newspaper Week by emphasizing its unique relevance in the coverage of government, community events and publication of timely public notices; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, celebrate National Newspaper Week 2018 and praise the essential contribution of newspapers to the health and viability of Cook County. end
