PROPOSED RESOLUTION
HONORING COMMISSIONER RICHARD BOYKIN
WHEREAS, Commissioner Richard Boykin (1st District) will vacate his seat on the Cook County Board of Commissioners on November 30, 2018 after four outstanding years of public service to the residents of Cook County; and
WHERAS, Commissioner Boykin grew up in Chicago's Englewood community and attended Chicago Vocational High School; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Boykin graduated Magna Cum Laude from Central State University, where he majored in Political Science; and
WHEREAS, upon returning to Chicago, Commissioner Boykin became a board member to the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind; and
WHEREAS, in 1991, Commissioner Boykin began his legal education at the University of Dayton, School of Law; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Boykin continues to practice law in the Chicago and Washington D.C. offices of Barnes & Thornburg LLP, where he is a partner; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Boykin began his career in public service as a Lyndon B. Johnson Intern for U.S. Representative Bobby Rush, followed by serving as a Congressional Black Caucus Fellow for former U.S. Senator Carol Moseley-Braun; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Boykin served as Legislative Director and then Chief of Staff for United States Congressman Danny K. Davis where he was instrumental in welfare-to-work, health care, energy and utility, and appropriations measures; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Boykin was elected to the Cook County Board of Commissioners for the 1st District in 2014; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Boykin served as a member of the Board's sub-committee on litigation and as chair of the Human Relations Committee, where he held a number of hearings to advocate for human rights; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Boykin has advocated to reduce the gun violence issue plaguing the City of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, throughout his years of public service, Commissioner Boykin has been dedicated to the needs and values of the residents of Cook County; and
