Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION A RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING WORLD AIDS DAY AND AWARENESS MONTH WHEREAS in 1989, World AIDS Day was designated as December 1, 1988. Government and health officials, non-governmental organizations, and individuals around the world observe the day, often with education on AIDS prevention and control, and WHEREAS LGBTQ activists led the effort for recognition by government leaders of the devastation and stigma caused by this disease within their community and beyond; and WHEREAS AIDS Awareness Month is an opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate successful accomplishments such as increased access to treatment and prevention services; and WHEREAS, The Cook County Health and Hospitals System is one of the largest providers of HIV/AIDS care in the Midwest and CCHHS Ruth M. A RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING WORLD AIDS DAY AND AWARENESS MONTH

WHEREAS in 1989, World AIDS Day was designated as December 1, 1988. Government and health officials, non-governmental organizations, and individuals around the world observe the day, often with education on AIDS prevention and control, and

WHEREAS LGBTQ activists led the effort for recognition by government leaders of the devastation and stigma caused by this disease within their community and beyond; and

WHEREAS AIDS Awareness Month is an opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate successful accomplishments such as increased access to treatment and prevention services; and

WHEREAS, The Cook County Health and Hospitals System is one of the largest providers of HIV/AIDS care in the Midwest and CCHHS Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center cares for individuals with HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases; and,

WHERAS, the Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center has provided the highest quality care for persons and families affected by infectious diseases, with respect, dignity and compassion, without regard to the ability to pay; and has ensured a patient-centered and consumer-guided environment; and has sought to better understand and to prevent these diseases through education and research; and

WHEREAS the Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center has also implemented Project Connect in 2012, a transitional care coordination program to help stabilize the health status of HIV patients who are newly diagnosed; and

WHEREAS the Cook County Board commends the important work of activist and advocacy groups that have worked tirelessly for decades to make progress; and

WHEREAS, the Cook County Board understands that it is still vital to increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education and research to help to help HIV/AIDS patients to live longer, more comfortable and independent lives and to prevent the spread of this disease; and
