PROPOSED RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE CELEBRATION OF DECEMBER AS HUMAN RIGHTS MONTH
WHEREAS, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations 70 years ago on December 10, 1948, represents the first comprehensive agreement among nations as to the specific rights and freedoms of all human beings; and
WHEREAS, the end of the Second World War prompted the international community to pledge to never again allow atrocities like those of that conflict to happen again; and
WHEREAS, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was designed to complement the Charter of the United Nations as guide to guaranteeing the rights of every person; and
WHEREAS, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights upholds the basic principles of liberty and freedom enshrined within the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights; and
WHEREAS, among the document’s most important guiding principles are a nation’s advancement of human rights by promoting freedom from torture, freedom of expression, press freedom, women’s rights, children’s rights, LGBT rights, and the protection of minorities; and
WHEREAS, human rights awareness is essential to the realization of fundamental freedoms and contributes to promoting equality, preventing conflict and human rights violations, and enhancing participation in democratic processes.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, The Cook County Board President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners honor this landmark document and uphold the values set forth therein.end
