40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE VETERANS AFFAIRS VETERAN (“VET”) CENTERS

 

WHEREAS, On June 13, 1979, Congress passed Public Law 96-22 establishing the Vet Centers within the Department of Veteran’s Affairs; and

 

WHEREAS, the Vet Centers were initially designed to provide outreach and specialized treatment and support services to veterans of Vietnam and the Vietnam Era; and

 

WHEREAS, over the course of time they have evolved, and eligibility expanded in order to provide specialized services for all veterans of conflict zones and for veterans who have experienced military sexual trauma; and

 

WHEREAS, the Vet Centers provide a wide range of social and psychological services, including professional readjustment counseling to eligible veterans, active duty service members, including National Guard and Reserve component and their families; and

 

WHEREAS, Cook County has five Vet Centers: Evanston, Forest Park, Chicago Orland Park and Chicago Heights; and

 

WHEREAS, Vet Centers are community based and part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners declares the week of June 9th through the 15th as Vet Center Recognition Week in Cook County; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this Resolution be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body and that an official copy of the same be presented to the five Vet Centers in Cook County.
