PROPOSED RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING THE PROFESSIONAL AND COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENTS OF DOCTOR DORIAN S. BOYLAND
WHEREAS, Dorian S. Boyland is a Chicago native who has earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh; and
WHEREAS, Dorian S. Boyland received his honorary doctorate on May 18, 2019, at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
WHEREAS, Dorian S. Boyland led a successful baseball career at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh being recognized as a College All-American and later inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame. He would go to be drafted in the second round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1976. In the process, Dorian became the first African American and highest draft pick ever from Wisconsin; and
WHEREAS, Dorian went on to have a seven-year career in Major League Baseball playing on the Pittsburgh Pirates 1979 World Series Championship team and ending his professional baseball career with the San Francisco Giants in 1983; and
WHEREAS, after professional baseball, Dorian entered into the automotive industry where he has successfully owned and/or operated 16 dealerships in seven states with a combined revenue of over 4 billion dollars; and
WHEREAS, in 2010, Boyland Auto Group, led by Dorian, was ranked the 4th largest African American Automotive Group in the United States and the 78th largest Automobile Group in the nation. Today, the Boyland Auto Group employs over 400 employees in 8 dealerships in five states; and
WHEREAS, Dorian S. Boyland has hired minorities and also provided business ownership and training opportunities to African American Automotive Dealers across the United States; and
WHEREAS, Dorian S. Boyland has won numerous automotive industry awards including Black Enterprise Dealer of the Year, Most Profitable Ford Dealer, Five Star by the Chrysler Corporation, Blue Oval Ford Motor Company and a Presidents Award Winner by American Honda; and
WHEREAS, Dorian S. Boyland actively gives back to the community and has donated over $3 million dollars in donations and in-kind support to nonprofits such as The Support Group, Hands Across America, Lou Rawls Telethon, Black Women Breast Cancer Awareness, Jack and Jill of America, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and 100 Black Men; and
WHEREAS, Dorian S. Boyland continues to be involved in his local community in Windermere, Florida as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and on a number of Board of Directors in the Automotive Dealers Association and youth-based nonprofits; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, does hereby honor Dorian S. Boyland for his years of leadership and commitment to the automotive industry and in the community; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be spread upon the official proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of Cook County and an official copy be tendered to Dorian S. Boyland in recognition of this honor. end
