PROPOSED RESOLUTION
HONORING COOK COUNTY LIBRARIANS FOR GOING BEYOND THE BOOK FOR COMMUNITY BUILDING
WHEREAS, library is traditionally known as a collection of books used for reading or study, and/or the building or room in which such a collection is kept. The word derives from the Latin liber, "book," and a Latinized Greek word, bibliotheca, is the origin of the word for library in Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, German, and Russian, and
WHEREAS, in the 19th century, libraries were acknowledged to be an indispensable part of community life as promoters of literacy, providers of a wide range of reading for all ages, and centers for community information services. Legislation required local authorities to devote public funds to this cause, and
WHEREAS, librarians, also known as information specialists, use their professional skills to connect resources and information to the public community through reference and research services, collection development, programming, technology and media platforms, and
WHEREAS, Cook County has approximately 205 libraries serving an estimated population of 5.3 million; and
WHEREAS, Cook County's libraries are places of information and have risen "beyond the book." They are an extension of the educational institutions in Cook County and are one of the our most important resources that build communities, provide access, promote literacy, protect individual rights and innovate; and
WHEREAS, every summer, most Cook County libraries have adopted a theme for Summer Reading Club where children, teens and adults win small prizes to encourage reading during the summer months. Summer Reading Club takes place for approximately 8-10 weeks (June - August) and starts when the regular school session ends, and
WHEREAS, libraries offer a variety of weekly themed-programs for all ages and patrons receive points and prizes for reading a certain number of books or for a certain amount of time. On average, 2.5 million pa...
