PROPOSED RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING OCTOBER AS DOWN SYNDROME ACCEPTANCE MONTH
WHEREAS, October is National Down Syndrome Acceptance Month, Down syndrome is the most frequently occurring chromosomal disorder; and
WHEREAS, through the efforts of human and civil rights activists, people with Down Syndrome have the right to live at home, attend their local public schools, get appropriate health care, get married, maintain a job, lead meaningful, integrated lives and contribute to society in so many wonderful ways; and
WHEREAS, in 2002 Nancy Gianni founded GiGi’s Playhouse in Hoffman Estates after her daughter Gulianna, “GiGi”, was born with Down syndrome; and
WHEREAS, she wanted to change the world view of Down syndrome and send a global message of acceptance for all; and
WHEREAS, at GiGi’s Playhouse families receive support and receive all the tools their child needs to succeed; and
WHEREAS, at GiGi’s Playhouse families have a community committed to empowering them from the time of a prenatal diagnosis to through childhood and into adulthood; and
WHEREAS, today there are 37 GiGi’s Playhouse locations across the county and also a location in Queretaro, Mexico.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RELOSVED, the President and the Board of Commissioners recognizes October as National Down Syndrome Acceptance Month and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be spread upon the Honorable Body and a suitable copy be tendered over to GiGi’s Playhouse founder Nancy Gianni, GiGi Gianni and all of the families that make up the community at GiGi’s Playhouse...end
