PROPOSED RESOLUTION
HONORING THE LIFE OF DOROTHY GREGORY
WHEREAS, Dorothy Gregory was called to be home with the Lord on September 17, 2019; and
WHEREAS, Dorothy Gregory was born in Stuttgart, Arkansas, on April 3, 1928, to Thomas and Helen Burks-Humphrey; and
WHEREAS, Dorothy Gregory graduated from Walter High School in 1946. Shortly thereafter, she met the love of her life Henry Gregory, and they got married in 1950. She was a devoted wife to Henry Gregory, and they raised two loving sons, George and Ray, until his death in 1970; and
WHEREAS, Dorothy Gregory began her career in the manufacturing industry working at Bradley Lamp Manufacturing Company for over 30 years. She would transition into the social-services sector supporting people with special needs on Chicago's West Side and then as a business owner of Gregory and Associates, a real estate company named after her late husband; and
WHEREAS, for over 50 years, Dorothy Gregory was a committed resident of the 4th District in the Washington Heights neighborhood. She is considered a community leader in the fight for racial equity and justice for all African-American people in the City of Chicago and the nation; and
WHEREAS, Dorothy Gregory was instrumental with several other women in the community to form a Safe Passage Program. This program offered daily safe routes for young children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade traveling to and from William H. Ryder Math & Science Specialty School; and
WHEREAS, during her life, Dorothy Gregory was known as a kind, tenderhearted, and giving individual who gave to the less fortunate. She opened her home to community residents that were displaced or who sought temporary housing. She also served food to the residents in need and volunteered at William H. Ryder Math & Science Specialty School; and
