Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION HONORING DR. M. WASIULLAH KHAN AND EAST-WEST UNIVERSITY WHEREAS, Dr. M. Wasiullah Khan, Chancellor of East-West University, grew up in Lahore, Pakistan and received his Master of Education from the University of the Punjab in Lahore. Dr. Khan immigrated to the United States in 1972. He received his Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Indiana University. Dr. Khan served as Dean of Academic and Learning Resources at Daniel Hale Williams University from 1977-1978; WHEREAS, Dr. M. Wasiullah Khan, Chancellor and Dr. Madhu Jain, Provost of East-West University conceived of the idea of East-West University on November 1, 1978; WHEREAS, East-West University was established in 1980. The University was awarded operating and degree granting authority; and classes began in the Fall Quarter of that year. Since 1983, East-West University has continuously been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA)...

PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

HONORING DR. M. WASIULLAH KHAN AND EAST-WEST UNIVERSITY

 

WHEREAS, Dr. M. Wasiullah Khan, Chancellor of East-West University, grew up in Lahore, Pakistan and received his Master of Education from the University of the Punjab in Lahore.  Dr. Khan immigrated to the United States in 1972.  He received his Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Indiana University.  Dr. Khan served as Dean of Academic and Learning Resources at Daniel Hale Williams University from 1977-1978;

 

WHEREAS, Dr. M. Wasiullah Khan, Chancellor and Dr. Madhu Jain, Provost of East-West University conceived of the idea of East-West University on November 1, 1978;

 

WHEREAS, East-West University was established in 1980.   The University was awarded operating and degree granting authority; and classes began in the Fall Quarter of that year.  Since 1983, East-West University has continuously been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA);

 

WHEREAS, East-West University’s mission is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence by all through relevant, effective and convenient education and provides equal educational opportunity for all racial, ethnic and socio-economic groups.  The University’s program offerings of liberal arts and sciences along with job and career related professional education are geared to the service economy of modern times.   The University promotes service to humankind with a global, multi-cultural and future oriented perspective;

 

WHEREAS, East-West University is dedicated to providing quality education to students from all backgrounds and benefit students from underserved communities.   The University is both comprehensive and pluralistic in terms of clientele, academic programs, educational delivery systems, research and publication projects and sources of financial support.  East-West University offers relevant, effective and convenient programs in liberal arts, sciences and career related areas like biology, electronics, computer science and business administration.

 

WHEREAS, East-West University enables its students to lead and serve, producing graduates committed to make a difference in the world. 

 

WHEREAS, consistent with its commitment to make higher education affordable, the University has maintained one of the lowest tuition rates among private colleges in Illinois and students graduate with the least amount of debt;

 

WHEREAS, almost 80 percent of East-West University students are from low-income families.  More than 50 percent of the University’s students are the first in their families to attend college.  The student population breakdown for the University is 53% African American; 19% Hispanic; 3% Caucasian; 21% international; 2% Asian and 2% multicultural;

 

WHEREAS, East-West University’s majority of students come from the Chicago public high schools and are predominantly from the west, south and southwest sections of the City of Chicago;

 

WHEREAS, East-West University has graduated thousands of students and has provided numerous scholarships for students in need and those who have been successful;

 

WHEREAS, East-West University opened its Student Life Center on April 24, 2014.  That building is a 165,000 square foot, 17 story state-of-the-art facility for current and prospective East-West students.  The Student Life Center offers students many modern benefits and amenities, including 10 floors of student housing, an athletic center, a multipurpose gym, welcoming area with a restaurant, a tutoring center, an expansive library, computer labs, and a conference center with an auditorium.  The building also serves as an active resource for the South Loop community as well as for visitors;

 

WHEREAS, East-West University has an established history offering education centered on leadership and dedicated to progress; 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVES that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, honor Dr. M. Wasiullah Khan, Chancellor and East-West University for providing 40 extraordinary years of education to thousands of students in Chicago and Illinois.
