PROPOSED RESOLUTION
HONORING THE AMERICAN INDIAN CENTER AND RECOGNIZING NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
WHEREAS, Illinois is the traditional homeland of the Council of the Three Fires: The Odawa, Ojibwe and Potawatomi Nations. Many other Tribes like the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac and Fox also called this area home; and
WHEREAS, located at the intersection of several great waterways, Illinois became a site of travel and healing for many Tribes. American Indians have called this area home since time immemorial; and
WHEREAS, in response to the growing needs of a rapidly-expanding local Native American population and the Indian Relocation program of the 1950s, the American Indian Center (AIC) was founded to advance the welfare of American Indians in the metropolitan area; and
WHEREAS, the AIC strives to be the primary cultural and community resource in the greater Chicago metropolitan area, creating bonds of understanding and communication between Native Americans and non-Native Americans; and
WHEREAS, AIC promotes fellowship among the nearly 65,000 Indian people of all Tribes living in the metropolitan Chicago area, conserving Indian cultural values through cultural, artistic and educational means; and
WHEREAS, AIC provides their members with support programs, physical and spiritual health in the community, and foster Native American youth; and
WHEREAS, in November of 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed a resolution designating November as "Native American Heritage Month", and
WHEREAS, since September 7, 1953, the American Indian Center has been a staple of the Native American community and will continue to highlight the contributions of Native Americans; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, hereby recognizes the American Indian Center for their contributions to the Native American community and residents of Cook County; and
