PROPOSED RESOLUTION
CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF CP CRAWFORD
WHEREAS, CP Crawford was called home to be with the Lord on November 20, 2019; and
WHEREAS, CP Crawford was born August 25, 1905 in Jackson Mississippi to John and Mattie Crawford; and
WHEREAS, CP Crawford was the youngest of five siblings including three brothers and two sisters. At an early age, his mother passed away, and he was subsequently raised by aunts and uncles; and
WHEREAS, CP Crawford was not allowed to attend school that led him to start working in the fields picking cotton, ploughing the fields of corn and manning the gardens; and
WHEREAS, CP Crawford applied his early work experience and went on to a career at Southland Oil Refinery. He would eventually move to Chicago, Illinois in 1949 to work at Illinois Central Railroad; and
WHEREAS, throughout his lifetime, CP Crawford was known as a caring and charismatic person who was well respected by his peers. He enjoyed to fish, smoke cigars, and play cards; and
WHEREAS, CP Crawford’s most significant accomplishment was the special relationship that he held with his four stepchildren, Shawn (Yolanda), Martez, Paige, and Curtis and his grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, in November 2015, CP Crawford was awarded an honorary high school diploma from Thornton Fractional South High School in Lansing, Illinois. This honor was in recognition of his love of education and the community; and
WHEREAS, since 2012, CP Crawford lived in Lansing, Illinois at the Tri-State Nursing Rehabilitation Center. The Village of Lansing and Mayor Patty Eidam provided CP Crawford with a recognition as being the oldest living resident in the community; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago White Sox honored CP Crawford at a game on September 12, 2019 for his service, contributions and longevity in the Greater Chicago area; and
WHEREAS, prior to his passing, CP Crawford was one of the oldest known living men in the United States; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the 5.2 million residents of Cook County does hereby mourn the loss of CP Crawford and celebrates his life and many contributions bettering the lives of the citizens of Cook County, Illinois; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this Resolution be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body and that an official copy of the same be tendered to the family of CP Crawford.
