Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION HONORING THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF ILLINOIS FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO EMPOWERING VOTERS AND CELEBRATING THE 100-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE ADOPTION OF THE 19TH AMENDMENT INTO THE U.S. CONSTITUTION. WHEREAS, on February 14, 1920, the League of Women Voters was officially founded in Chicago as a "mighty political experiment" designed to help 20 million women carry out their new responsibilities as women; and, WHEREAS, since its inception, the League of Women Voters organized and supported suffrage leaders to advocate for the ratification of the 19th Amendment; and, WHEREAS, on May 21, 1919, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the 19th Amendment; and 2 weeks later, the U.S. Senate followed; and, WHEREAS, on August 18, 1920, Tennessee, the 36th state, ratified the 19th Amendment and the three-fourths requirement for the passage of the legislation was completed; and, WHEREAS, on August 26, 1920, the Amendment was formally made into law and adopted into the U....

PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

HONORING THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF ILLINOIS FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO EMPOWERING VOTERS AND CELEBRATING THE 100-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE ADOPTION OF THE 19TH AMENDMENT INTO THE U.S. CONSTITUTION.

 

WHEREAS, on February 14, 1920, the League of Women Voters was officially founded in Chicago as a “mighty political experiment” designed to help 20 million women carry out their new responsibilities as women; and,

 

WHEREAS, since its inception, the League of Women Voters organized and supported suffrage leaders to advocate for the ratification of the 19th Amendment; and,

 

WHEREAS, on May 21, 1919, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the 19th Amendment; and 2 weeks later, the U.S. Senate followed; and,

 

WHEREAS, on August 18, 1920, Tennessee, the 36th state, ratified the 19th Amendment and the three-fourths requirement for the passage of the legislation was completed; and,

 

WHEREAS, on August 26, 1920, the Amendment was formally made into law and adopted into the U.S. Constitution by proclamation of Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby certifying the ratification; and,

 

WHEREAS, the 19th Amendment guarantees women the right to vote; and,

 

WHEREAS, on February 14, 2020 League of Women Voters celebrated 100 years of work dedicated to empowering voters and defending democracy; and,

 

WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters continues to advocate for election protection, democratic reforms and equal access to the ballot, while maintaining a commitment to nonpartisanship and fostering an informed electorate; and,

 

WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters remains nonpartisan and works to influence public policy through education and advocacy; and,

 

WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters serves to inform voters through voter registration activities, sponsoring candidate debates, publishing voter guides and public policy research and holding conferences on key issues.

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Cook County Board of Commissioners and residents of Cook County honor the League of Women Voter of Illinois for their contribution to empowering voters and celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment into the U.S. Constitution.
