PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

HONORING KAN-WIN

 

WHEREAS Kan-Win’s mission is to eradicate gender-based violence, including domestic violence and sexual assault for women and children across Asian American communities and beyond; and

 

WHEREAS, In the late 1980’s women advocate’s and social service providers came together in response to the growing demand for domestic violence services in the Korean American community. From those discussions KAN-WIN was officially founded on August 15, 1990; and

 

WHEREAS, Previously, KAN-WIN went by the name “Korean American Women In Need.”  In 2013 with increasingly diversity of its clientele, KAN-WIN wanted to show commitment to meeting the great diversity of culture and linguistic needs within the community; and

 

WHEREAS, Our vision is of a healthy and safe community from violence and oppression in which everyone. Abusive situations can be changed and that women can be empowered through education, advocacy and intervention; and

 

WHEREAS, We work to collectively to promote the philosophy of equality without regard to race, class, gender, sexual orientation or disability; and

 

WHEREAS KAN-WIN is the only agency in the Midwest to operate a 24-hour hotline in Korean and other languages to assist survivors with crisis counseling, crisis intervention, safety assessment and emergency and short-term shelters; and

 

WHEREAS, KAN-WIN strives to develop up-to-date, multilingual and culturally competent resource materials on domestic violence for its survivors; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, hereby honor and recognize KAN-WIN for their contribution to the viability of Cook County; and 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be tendered to KAN-WIN as a means of communicating our appreciation.
