PROPOSED RESOLUTION
HONORING FATHER TOM HURLEY FOR HIS LEADERSHIP, DEDICATION AND COMMITMENT TO OLD ST. PATRICK’S CHURCH AND THE NORTH LAWNDALE COMMUNITY
WHEREAS, Father Tom Hurley, a Roman Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago was ordained in 1993; and
WHEREAS, His priestly service included appointments at Most Holy Redeemer and St. Cajetan Parishes, and St. Joseph College Seminary at Loyola University; and
WHEREAS, Fr. Hurley is the eighth of nine children and was born and raised in the Beverly/Morgan Park neighborhoods of Chicago's South Side; and
WHEREAS, in 2007, Fr. Hurley succeeded Fr. Jack Wall, becoming the 17th Pastor of the historic Old St. Patrick's Church in Chicago's West Loop. There, he led a dynamic ministry that today operates with the vision of "Leading a movement of Change within the Catholic Church marked by radical inclusivity, exquisite worship and transformative kinship;” and
WHEREAS, Fr. Hurley serves on the Boards of Marist High School, Frances Xavier Warde School, and The Children At the Crossroads Foundation. He holds degrees from Loyola University Chicago, the University of St. Mary of the Lake, and the University of Notre Dame; and
WHEREAS, Father Hurley and Old St Pat’s Church started The Kinship Initiative in the spring of 2011. This initiative is a community development partnership between residents in the North Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago’s West Side and Old St. Patrick’s Catholic Church; and
WHEREAS, Despite the racial, religious and political division Father Hurley & Old St. Pat’s Church aimed to set a different course where they engaged churches, schools, community organizations, government officials, businesses and individual leaders in North Lawndale and at Old St. Pat’s that chose to work together to address the pressing issues of our city and to provide timely resources from Old St. Pats Church to be used in the community of North Lawndale; and
WHEREAS, Father Hurley’s legacy of community engagement, commitment to the initiatives of Old St. Patricks Church and commitment to his family will not be forgotten or remiss.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Toni Preckwinkle President of the Cook County Board of Commissioners as well as the Board of Commissioners along with the 5.3 million residents of Cook County do hereby recognized Father Thomas Hurley for his invaluable, leadership, dedication and commitment to Old St. Patrick’s Church and the North Lawndale Community and herewith expresses our sincere gratitude for your service to the community.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution is forwarded to Father Thomas Hurley and copy be placed upon the official record of the honorable body recognizing this auspicious occasion
