HONORABLE ADLAI EWING STEVENSON III, IN MEMORIAM

 

WHEREAS Almighty God in His infinite wisdom has called Adlai Ewing Stevenson III from our midst, and

 

WHEREAS Adlai Ewing Stevenson III was the beloved husband of Nancy (nee Anderson), and

 

WHEREAS Adlai Ewing Stevenson III was the loving father of Adlai IV (Barbara Linger), Lucy (Christopher Neher), Katherine (Larry Kramer), and Warwick (Winifred Stevenson), and

 

WHEREAS Adlai Ewing Stevenson III was the cherished grandfather of Adlai Stevenson V, Katherine Neher Johnston, Maxwell Kramer, Benjamin Kramer, Toby Bahrmasel, Jonas Bahrmasel, Olivia Bahrmasel and Liam Bahrmasel, and

 

WHEREAS Adlai Ewing Stevenson III was the beloved son of Adlai Stevenson II and Ellen Borden, and

 

WHEREAS Adlai Ewing Stevenson III the dear brother of John Stevenson and Borden Stevenson, and

 

WHEREAS Adlai Ewing Stevenson III attended Milton Academy in Massachusetts, Harrow School in England, Harvard College and received a law degree in 1957 from Harvard Law School, and

 

WHEREAS Adlai Ewing Stevenson III served as a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and served in the Marine Reserves until he was discharged in 1961 as a captain, and

 

WHEREAS Adlai Ewing Stevenson III served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1965 to 1967; and

 

WHEREAS Adlai Ewing Stevenson III served as Illinois State Treasurer from 1967 to 1970; and

 

WHEREAS Adlai Ewing Stevenson III was elected to the United States Senate in a 1970 Illinois special election to fill the balance of the term of Senator Everett Dirksen who died in office, and

 

WHEREAS Adlai Ewing Stevenson III was reelected to the United States Senate in 1974 and served as the first Chairman of the Senate Ethics Committee and Chairman of a Special Committee which led the first major reorganization of the Senate since the early 19th century, and

 

WHEREAS a member of the US Senate, Adlai Ewing Stevenson III co-authored essential energy measures that included legislation to establish the Department of Energy, fuel efficiency standards, emergency natural gas pricing and projects for development of alternative energy sources, and

 

WHEREAS after leaving the US Senate, Adlai Ewing Stevenson III ran for Governor of the State of Illinois and was active in business and cultural relations with East Asia. He served as President of the U.S. Committee of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council, Co-Chair of the East Asia Financial Markets Development Project, President and Chairman of the Japan America Society of Chicago, Chairman of the Midwest U.S. Japan Association, a member of the U.S. Korea Wisemen Council, the Advisory Board of the Korea Economic Institute and member of the U.S. Committee of the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific, and

 

WHEREAS Adlai Ewing Stevenson III founded and served as the Chairman of the Adlai Stevenson Center on Democracy which was formed to enhance the global understanding and practice of democracy, and

 

WHEREAS all who knew him will attest that Adlai Ewing Stevenson III was a kind and compassionate man, virtuous of character and gentle in spirit, admired and respected by his many friends and neighbors, and dearly loved by his family, now therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners of Cook County that the Board does hereby offer its deepest condolences and most heartfelt sympathy to the family and many friends of Adlai Ewing Stevenson III and joins them in sorrow at this time of loss, and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this text be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body, and a suitable copy of same be tendered to the family of Adlai Ewing Stevenson III that his memory may be so honored and ever cherished.
