PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

A RESOLUTION HONORING JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION DAY IN THE VILLAGE OF HANOVER PARK

 

WHEREAS, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, declaring the enslaved people in Confederate territory free which led to the passing of the 13th Amendment which formally abolished slavery in the United States of America; and

 

WHEREAS, news regarding the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation was delayed and didn’t reach authorities and African Americans in the South and Southwestern areas of the United States until June 19, 1865 when word reached Galveston, Texas; and

 

WHEREAS, June 19th holds special place of significance and meaning to the African-American community; and

 

WHEREAS, for over 150 years, Juneteenth, also known as “Emancipation Day,” and “Freedom Day,” continues to be the most recognized and the oldest African American holiday observed in the United States; and

 

WHEREAS, a Juneteenth celebration in the Village of Hanover Park will take place on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at the Ontarioville Plaza; and

 

WHEREAS, JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION DAY in the Village of Hanover Park, Illinois will be celebrated and all residents are encouraged to become more aware of the significance of this celebration in African-American history and in the heritage of our nation by attending the Juneteenth Celebration hosted by the Hanover Park Sister Cities Committee; and

 

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Cook County Board of Commissioners do hereby honor the Juneteenth Celebration Day in the Village of Hanover Park; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that suitable copies of this resolution are presented Village of Hanover Park Trustee Herb Porter, Mayor Rodney Craig, and the Village of Hanover Park Board of Trustees.
