Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION RESOLUTION HONORING THE 1980 MORAINE VALLEY WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM WHEREAS, In 1980, Moraine Valley Community College was a small junior college, a place where students who weren't ready for the cost or commitment of a four-year institution could get their university studies and perhaps decide their path; and WHEREAS, At that time, women's athletics was secondary. No one recruited for the Moraine Valley women's volleyball team. There were no scholarships. There wasn't a mascot or even a team name; and WHEREAS, These young women on the precipice of adulthood, graduates of area high schools including Andrew, Shepard and Mother McAuley simply shared a love for the game of volleyball; and WHEREAS, Pure sportsmanship brought the young women together on the court that year, and pure sportsmanship enabled them to play their way to the top tournament in Florida, where they started at No. 9 and moved as high as No. 8; and WHEREAS, They took second at state,16th at na...

RESOLUTION HONORING THE 1980 MORAINE VALLEY WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM

WHEREAS, In 1980, Moraine Valley Community College was a small junior college, a place where students who weren't ready for the cost or commitment of a four-year institution could get their university studies and perhaps decide their path; and

WHEREAS, At that time, women's athletics was secondary. No one recruited for the Moraine Valley women's volleyball team. There were no scholarships. There wasn't a mascot or even a team name; and

WHEREAS, These young women on the precipice of adulthood, graduates of area high schools including Andrew, Shepard and Mother McAuley simply shared a love for the game of volleyball; and

WHEREAS, Pure sportsmanship brought the young women together on the court that year, and
pure sportsmanship enabled them to play their way to the top tournament in Florida, where they started at No. 9 and moved as high as No. 8; and

WHEREAS, They took second at state,16th at nationals and finished the season with a 38-4-3 record, becoming the college's first nationally ranked team; and

WHEREAS, For the first time in the college's history, this year, the entire team was inducted to the Moraine Valley Hall of Fame to include: Ellen Schultz, Lisa Barcella, Sheila Burke, Jackie Davis, Maureen Frangella, Jackie Gruca, Joanna Poulos, Laura Sartausky, Patti Wolf, manager Carol Filipiak and head coach Sue Gasperec; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, gathered here this twenty seventh day of April, 2023 do hereby express our congratulations and celebrate the women of the 1980 Moraine Valley women's volleyball team for their accomplishment of being the college's first nationally ranked team along with their induction to the school's hall of fame; and
