Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION HONORING AND CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF FALLEN CHICAGO FIREFIGHTER JERMAINE PELT WHEREAS, in the afternoon of April 11, 2023, firefighter crews responded to a house fire in the West Pulman neighborhood, which quickly spread to three buildings, and WHEREAS, while dousing the fire from an adjacent building's second floor, Firefighter Jermain Pelt received an order to evacuate the building due to worsening conditions as that structure had also caught fire, and WHEREAS, unfortunately Officer Pelt lost consciousness before he could evacuate, losing his life from smoke inhalation, sacrificing himself while saving the lives of others, and WHEREAS, Officer Pelt joined the Chicago Fire Department in 2005 and served the Roseland community in the South Side his entire career, and WHEREAS, Officer Pelt graduated from Corliss High School in the Pullman neighborhood before attending Olive-Harvey College, and WHEREAS, Officer Pelt, 49 years of age, had recently proudly walked...

WHEREAS, in the afternoon of April 11, 2023, firefighter crews responded to a house fire in the West Pulman neighborhood, which quickly spread to three buildings, and

WHEREAS, while dousing the fire from an adjacent building's second floor, Firefighter Jermain Pelt received an order to evacuate the building due to worsening conditions as that structure had also caught fire, and

WHEREAS, unfortunately Officer Pelt lost consciousness before he could evacuate, losing his life from smoke inhalation, sacrificing himself while saving the lives of others, and

WHEREAS, Officer Pelt joined the Chicago Fire Department in 2005 and served the Roseland community in the South Side his entire career, and

WHEREAS, Officer Pelt graduated from Corliss High School in the Pullman neighborhood before attending Olive-Harvey College, and

WHEREAS, Officer Pelt, 49 years of age, had recently proudly walked his 28-year-old daughter down the aisle to get married, and

WHEREAS, firefighters from Officer Pelt's firehouse at 119th and South Morgan recall him as a kind-hearted man with a true service spirit who was a registered nurse, a paramedic, an instructor at the fire academy, and a great firehouse cook, and

WHEREAS, Officer Pelt is remembered for his heart, his smile, and his dedication to service and as a devoted family man, a husband, son, brother, and father of two who leaves behind an adoring family - including a 6-year-old son Jared, and a daughter, Jorie, and

WHEREAS, this tragic event serves to impress all of us with a deeper appreciation of the valor of our local firefighters who are always prepared to face dangerous hazards to protect the citizens of our County.
