PROPOSED RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING NAZNEEN HASHMI AS THE FIRST SOUTH ASIAN WOMAN ON THE STREAMWOOD VILLAGE TRUSTEE BOARD
WHEREAS, Nazneen Hashmi was elected to the Streamwood Village Trustee Board following the April 4, 2023, election, making her the first South Asian woman to serve on the Board; and
WHEREAS, Trustee Hashmi is an Indian Muslim woman from Hyderabad, India who migrated to the US with her family when she was just 18, where she then she picked up two full-time and one part-time job to provide for her family when her parents were unemployed; and
WHEREAS, Trustee Hashmi overcame great personal struggle following the divorce of her arranged marriage by finding the strength to work full-time to support and raise her two children while also attending college and getting a Master's degree; and
WHEREAS, Today, Trustee Hashmi is an Adjunct Professor at Illinois Institute of Technology and an ISO Auditor; and
WHEREAS, Trustee Hashmi has a proven record of working to help those in her community, such as through her work on the Community Relations Commission at the Village of Streamwood, the Hanover Township Committee On Youth, the Board of YMCA, the Streamwood Women's Club which provides scholarships and awards to underserved students in the community, and the Apna Ghar Organization which provides shelter and advocacy to immigrant women who are victims/survivors of domestic violence; and
WHEREAS, Trustee Hashmi was awarded the 2019 At-large Peggy A. Montes Unsung Heroine Award which recognizes women across Cook County whose contributions to their communities, families and professional endeavors have been so vital, but seldom recognized; and
WHEREAS, Trustee Hashmi is known for being "just a phone call away" for the entire community whenever they are in need, no matter the scale; and
WHEREAS, Cook County's strength is in its diversity and Trustee Hashmi is a shining example of that fact;
