RESOLUTION HONORING SCAMMON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR 100 YEARS OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

 

WHEREAS, Jonathan Y. Scammon Elementary School was established in 1926 and currently serves students at its location at 4201 West Henderson Street, continuing to open its doors to the youth of the Northwest Side of Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, the enduring values inscribed above Jonathan Y. Scammon Elementary School’s historic entrance, “Be truthful, kind and just, then you will fear no one,” continue to serve as a guiding principle, reflecting the school’s commitment to developing respectful, responsible students who are ready to succeed; and

 

WHEREAS, Scammon Elementary School is a public school serving students from Pre-K through 8th grade; and

 

WHEREAS, Scammon Elementary School has prioritized high-quality literacy instruction and student-centered learning experiences to support academic growth; and

 

WHEREAS, Scammon Elementary School has demonstrated a commitment to college and career readiness through participation in national initiatives supporting student success; and

 

WHEREAS, Scammon Elementary School students have demonstrated academic achievement through participation in the National Beta Honor Society, Chicago Junior Math League competitions, and advanced coursework in Algebra and Geometry; and

 

WHEREAS, Scammon Elementary School continues to integrate technology to enhance learning in an evolving digital world; and

 

WHEREAS, Scammon Elementary School serves a diverse and multilingual student population, continuing its legacy of meeting the needs of its community through bilingual education and English Learner programming; and

 

WHEREAS, Scammon Elementary School fosters a positive and inclusive school culture that empowers students to lead, collaborate, and contribute to their community; and

 

WHEREAS, Scammon Elementary School strengthens school-community partnerships through events and programs such as Dia del Niño, Hispanic Heritage Night, Family Movie Nights, Winter STEM Nights and Coffee with Admin; and

 

WHEREAS, Scammon Elementary School provides enriching after-school and extended learning opportunities, including drama, robotics, and gardening programs, as well as the arts, fostering creativity, collaboration, and student voice while affirming student identity; and

 

WHEREAS, students at Scammon Elementary School, known as the Huskies, take pride in their school colors of blue and marigold and demonstrate a commitment to personal growth and positive contributions to their community; and

 

WHEREAS, students at Scammon Elementary School have opportunities to build teamwork, discipline, and school pride through participation in basketball, cheerleading, volleyball, soccer, and track and field; and

 

WHEREAS, Scammon Elementary continues to build on its century-long legacy by preparing students to thrive academically, socially, and as engaged members of their community; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners do hereby recognize and congratulate Jonathan Y. Scammon Elementary School on the 100th anniversary of its founding; and


BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the leadership of Scammon Elementary School in honor of the century of academic excellence they have provided to the Northwest Side of Chicago.
