PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

RESOLUTION HONORING THE WESTSIDE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE ALLIANCE (WEJA) IN RECOGNITION OF EARTH MONTH AND EARTH DAY 2026

 

WHEREAS, the month of April is nationally recognized as Earth Month, culminating in the annual observance of Earth Day, which calls upon communities, governments, and organizations to protect the environment, promote sustainability, and advance environmental justice for present and future generations; and

 

WHEREAS, environmental justice is a matter of public health, equity, and community resilience, recognizing that historically underserved communities-particularly communities of color-have too often borne the disproportionate burden of environmental hazards, pollution, disinvestment, and limited access to green space, clean air, and safe infrastructure; and

 

WHEREAS, the Westside Environmental Justice Alliance (WEJA) was established to confront these inequities by mobilizing residents across Chicago’s West Side to advocate for cleaner environments, healthier neighborhoods, and equitable environmental policies that promote sustainability and community well-being; and

 

WHEREAS, the mission of WEJA reflects a community-centered approach to environmental leadership-engaging residents, youth, families, and neighborhood stakeholders in education, organizing, and advocacy efforts that advance environmental awareness, climate resilience, and neighborhood revitalization across the 1st District of Cook County; and

 

WHEREAS, the work of WEJA has empowered residents to participate in community clean-up initiatives, environmental education programs, and grassroots advocacy campaigns that promote environmental stewardship, responsible development, and sustainable community planning in historically underserved communities; and

 

WHEREAS, the leadership and vision of Crystal E. Gardner, founder of the Westside Environmental Justice Alliance, have been instrumental in advancing environmental justice efforts throughout Chicago’s West Side, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to community empowerment, public health, and neighborhood sustainability; and

 

WHEREAS, Crystal E. Gardner is a proud product of Chicago Public Schools, having graduated from Sayre Language Academy and Whitney M. Young High School, and continued her academic journey at Florida A&M University, later earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Arts, Entertainment and Media Management from Columbia College Chicago, and a Master’s degree in Public Service Management from DePaul University, where she further strengthened her expertise in community development, public leadership, and social enterprise, including international study in Kenya focused on sustainable community development; and

 

WHEREAS, Crystal E. Gardner’s academic preparation, combined with her lived experience as a West Side community leader, has informed the strategic direction of WEJA and strengthened its capacity to address environmental challenges through data-informed advocacy, coalition building, and community engagement; and

 

WHEREAS, the Westside Environmental Justice Alliance continues to serve as a vital community resource-promoting environmental education, sustainability initiatives, and neighborhood advocacy that contribute to healthier living conditions and improved quality of life for residents across Cook County’s 1st District; and

 

WHEREAS, during Earth Month and in recognition of Earth Day 2026, Cook County recognizes the importance of community-based organizations like WEJA that are leading local efforts to protect natural resources, reduce environmental disparities, and build stronger, more resilient communities;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and Members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners do hereby recognize and honor the Westside Environmental Justice Alliance (WEJA) for its outstanding leadership, service, and commitment to advancing environmental justice, sustainability, and community empowerment throughout Cook County’s 1st District; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners expresses its sincere appreciation to Crystal E. Gardner for her visionary leadership and dedication to improving environmental conditions, promoting public health, and fostering community-driven solutions that support a healthier and more sustainable future for all residents; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Westside Environmental Justice Alliance (WEJA) in recognition of its meaningful contributions to environmental justice and community well-being during Earth Month and Earth Day 2026.
