Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION A RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING WORLD AIDS DAY WHEREAS, On World AIDS Day, people across the globe unite to raise awareness about HIV/AIDs, support those living with HIV and remember those who have passed away; and, WHEREAS, Thirty-six years ago the first documented cases of AIDS brought about an era of uncertainty, fear, and discrimination; and, WHEREAS, In Illinois, an estimated 45,000 people live with HIV or AIDS, and in Chicago, approximately 28,000 people live with the disease; and, WHEREAS, The Cook County Health and Hospitals System is one of the largest providers of HIV/AIDS care in the Midwest. CCHHS' Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center cares for individuals with HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases, offering a wide array of primary and specialty care, education and social support services; and, WHEREAS, Over the last year, The CORE Center cared for more than 5,200 unique patients living with HIV/AIDS. PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

A RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING WORLD AIDS DAY

 

WHEREAS, On World AIDS Day, people across the globe unite to raise awareness about HIV/AIDs, support those living with HIV and remember those who have passed away; and,

 

WHEREAS, Thirty-six years ago the first documented cases of AIDS brought about an era of uncertainty, fear, and discrimination; and,

 

WHEREAS, In Illinois, an estimated 45,000 people live with HIV or AIDS, and in Chicago, approximately 28,000 people live with the disease; and,

 

WHEREAS, The Cook County Health and Hospitals System is one of the largest providers of HIV/AIDS care in the Midwest. CCHHS’ Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center cares for individuals with HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases, offering a wide array of primary and specialty care, education and social support services; and,

 

WHEREAS, Over the last year, The CORE Center cared for more than 5,200 unique patients living with HIV/AIDS. In April 2015, CCHHS opened a new clinic at The CORE Center to provide HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, or PrEP, to prevent HIV infection in persons at high risk; and,

 

WHEREAS, By shining a light on this issue and educating more communities about the importance of testing and treatment, many lives have been improved and saved. However, the work is not yet done and the urgency to intervene in this epidemic is critical.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners commemorates World AIDS Day as December 1, 2017.
