HONORING QUILEN BLACKWELL, FOUNDER OF SOUTHSIDE BLOOMS

WHEREAS, Quilen Blackwell is the founder and visionary leader of Southside Blooms, a nonprofit social enterprise dedicated to transforming the landscape and future of Chicago's South and West Sides; and

WHEREAS, under Mr. Blackwell's leadership, Southside Blooms has turned vacant lots into vibrant, sustainable flower farms, bringing beauty, opportunity, and economic vitality to neighborhoods long overlooked for investment; and

WHEREAS, these flower farms serve not only as sources of environmental renewal but as platforms for workforce development, providing at-risk youth with hands-on training and paid employment in floral design, logistics, agriculture, entrepreneurship, and sales; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Blackwell has collaborated with key public partners, including the Cook County Land Bank Authority, which has played an essential role in making vacant land available for redevelopment into productive, community-serving floral farms; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his extraordinary achievements and his unwavering commitment to empowering youth, revitalizing neighborhoods, and reimagining what sustainable development can achieve, Quilen Blackwell has been honored as the 2025 CNN Hero of the Year, a national distinction celebrating individuals who uplift their communities with innovation, compassion, and impact; and
