MONTES UNSUNG HEROINE AWARD WHEREAS, Sandra Tomschin was born in Texas and moved to Cook County at two years old. She grew up in Pilsen and then moved to Cicero in the 1980s; and WHEREAS, Sandra has lived a life of service her entire life, living by the motto, "If I can help, I will, if I'm not sure, I'll try"; and WHEREAS, Sandra began her public service in the Chicago Public School system, working in early childhood education, and advocating for the city's most underserved communities; and WHEREAS, seeing the effect she had on children and families only spurred Sandra's desire to continue to serve. Sandra opened the Town of Cicero Community Center as Deputy Director and developed programming for Cicero's youth; and WHEREAS, Sandra also serves her community as a current elected Board Member for JS Morton High School District 201, where she fights for funding the arts to ensure students re...

HONORING SANDRA TOMSCHIN ON RECEIVING THE 16th DISTRICT'S 2025 PEGGY A. MONTES UNSUNG HEROINE AWARD

 

WHEREAS, Sandra Tomschin was born in Texas and moved to Cook County at two years old. She grew up in Pilsen and then moved to Cicero in the 1980s; and

 

WHEREAS, Sandra has lived a life of service her entire life, living by the motto, "If I can help, I will, if I'm not sure, I'll try"; and

 

WHEREAS, Sandra began her public service in the Chicago Public School system, working in early childhood education, and advocating for the city's most underserved communities; and

 

WHEREAS, seeing the effect she had on children and families only spurred Sandra’s desire to continue to serve. Sandra opened the Town of Cicero Community Center as Deputy Director and developed programming for Cicero's youth; and

 

WHEREAS, Sandra also serves her community as a current elected Board Member for JS Morton High School District 201, where she fights for funding the arts to ensure students receive a well-balanced education; and

 

WHEREAS, Sandra does not stop her service with the youth of Cicero. As an advocate for seniors, she has built relationships across the county to ensure she knows where seniors can get the services they need; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2019, Sandra was appointed Administrative Director of the Cicero Public Library. She describes this as her "dream job".  Sandra understands the library is a lifeline for many, and she advocates for homeless prevention services, job training programs, community gardens, and increased family-friendly programming; and

 

WHEREAS, As the first Latina Director of the Library, Sandra wants to show the community that anything is possible, and that you can turn your dreams into reality at the library; and

 

WHEREAS, for as long as she can remember, Sandra has always wanted to help people. She learned from her mother that you always have time to help. From advocating for early childhood education to bringing awareness to elder services, Sandra is always willing to listen to people and help; and

 

WHEREAS, her work has helped residents get back on the right track, prevented homelessness, led to personal growth, and brought comfort to those in pain; and

 

WHEREAS, as a leader in the Town of Cicero, Sandra's willingness to volunteer, help, and assist those in need is unequaled; and

 

WHEREAS, Sandra is honored and humbled to receive the 16th District’s Peggy A. Montes Unsung Heroine Award; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the work and service of Sandra Tomschin has made an incredible impact on Cook County, the Town of Cicero, and the resident’s they serve; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, do hereby honor Sandra Tomschin in April of 2025.
