HONORING DR. CHERYL GREEN ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AS PRESIDENT OF GOVERNORS STATE UNIVERSITY

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Cheryl Green has dedicated more than 30 years to the field of higher education, serving as an educator, administrator, and leader who has significantly advanced academic enrichment opportunities and student success initiatives for first-generation and non-traditional college students; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Green currently serves as the sixth President of Governors State University, where her visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to student success have solidified the university's reputation for excellence; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Green’s career includes distinguished service as Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Interim Chancellor for the University of Wisconsin Whitewater, and Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at Tennessee State University, as well as numerous administrative and academic roles at Chicago State University; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Green has demonstrated exceptional fiscal management, overseeing budgets exceeding $300 million and contributing to over $15 million in grant funding while conducting scholarly research focused on student achievement and community-based health initiatives; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Green’s commitment to community service is evidenced by her active participation on numerous advisory boards and boards of directors, including the Manchester University Board of Trustees, the Association of Governing Boards (ABG) Council of Presidents, the Will County Center for Economic Development, and the Southland Development Authority Board of Directors; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Green has been recognized with numerous accolades, including Chicago Crain’s 2021 Notable Black Leaders and Executives, the Illinois Black Hall of Fame’s Woman of First Distinction, the 2023 Outstanding Commitment in Education award by the Illinois State Treasurer, and as a 2023 Business Leader of Color by Chicago United; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Green has inspired students, colleagues, and her community with her dedication, leadership, and advocacy, while also serving as a role model through her membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® and her recognition as a Silver Life member of the NAACP; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Green’s enduring commitment to education and equity has left an indelible impact on Governors State University, the students she has mentored, and the broader educational community;

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, hereby commends and honors Dr. Cheryl Green for her remarkable career and outstanding contributions to higher education and the community; and

 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Green for her service and wishes her the very best in her well-deserved retirement; and

 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Cheryl Green as an expression of the Board’s admiration and appreciation for her extraordinary accomplishments.
