PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH OF THE TRINITY

 

WHEREAS, the First Lutheran Church of the Trinity was established in 1865 as the first Lutheran church on Chicago’s near South Side, and

 

WHEREAS, the First Lutheran Church of the Trinity is the oldest Christian congregation in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago, and

 

WHEREAS, the First Lutheran Church of the Trinity was originally located on the southeast corner of 25th Place and South Canal, and

 

WHEREAS, the First Lutheran Church of the Trinity was built at its current site at 643 West 31st Street in Chicago in 1913, and

 

WHEREAS, the First Lutheran Church of the Trinity established several branch schools to serve the students of the local community, and

 

WHEREAS, the Senior pastors of First Trinity were Ferdinand Doederlein (1866-1877), Louis Lochner (1877-1909), Arthur Both (1910-52), Harold Lachmann (1953-58), Albert Rolf (1959-62), Adam Dietrich (1963-67), Gerald Peppler (1967-78), Ronald Nitz (1979-86), Jonathan Breimeier (1986-95), William Hall (1995-97), Thomas Gaulke (2009-2018), Nicolette ‘Nic’ Peñaranda (2018-2021) and Christina M. Montgomery (current), and

 

WHEREAS, the First Lutheran Church of the Trinity has also served as a community center which hosted various community events including clothing drives, art, and music festivals, and

 

WHEREAS, the First Lutheran Church of the Trinity was the first parish to elect a female president of the congregation, and

 

WHEREAS, the First Lutheran Church of the Trinity voted to become a Reconciling in Christ

congregation welcoming lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender parishioners in 2013, and

 

WHEREAS, the First Lutheran Church of the Trinity has long served the residents of the Bridgeport neighborhood and has been active promoting services for the area, and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that this text be spread upon the Official Proceedings of this Honorable Body, and that a suitable copy of same be tendered to the members of First Lutheran Church of the Trinity in solemn commemoration of the many years of worship and service and in grateful acknowledgment of the important contributions made by the First Lutheran Church of the Trinity in the Bridgeport community.
