PROPOSED RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING OCTOBER 10, 2026, AS NATIONAL INDEPENDENT COSTUME STORE DAY
WHEREAS, independent costume stores support the creative and cultural life of Cook County by serving schools, theatres, performers, filmmakers, artists, community organizations, neighborhood celebrations, businesses, and families; and
WHEREAS, these year-round local businesses provide professional knowledge, personal service, theatrical resources, craftsmanship, creative employment, and access to costumes, makeup, wigs, masks, accessories, props, vintage garments, and rental collections; and
WHEREAS, the National Costumers Association established National Independent Costume Store Day to recognize the contributions of independent costume stores and encourage communities to support these important local institutions; and
WHEREAS, Chicago Costume Company, founded in 1976, is celebrating fifty years of serving Chicago and Cook County and has helped bring countless theatrical productions, school programs, public celebrations, performances, and community events to life; and
WHEREAS, independent costume stores face increasing pressure from temporary seasonal chains and large online retailers, making public awareness and community support especially important to their continued success; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners recognizes October 10, 2026, as National Independent Costume Store Day and honors the independent costume stores, costumers, designers, craftspeople, artists, and employees whose work contributes to the cultural and economic vitality of Cook County.
