PROPOSED RESOLUTION
HONORING AND CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF FALLEN CHICAGO POLICE OFFICER ARÉANAH PRESTON
WHEREAS, during the midnight of May 6, 2023, 24-year-old Chicago Police Officer Aréanah Preston was shot down while trying to get to her home in Avalon Park after a day of service; and
WHEREAS, Officer Preston is described as “trying to make a change on this Earth” and someone who wanted to show young people that policing “can make a difference in the community”; and
WHEREAS, Officer Preston had been on the force for only three years and is remembered for her kindness, intellect and commitment to service; and
WHEREAS, Officer Preston had recently completed her master’s degree in jurisprudence from Loyola School of Law and was scheduled to receive her diploma days after her tragic death; and
WHEREAS, Officer Preston's fellow 5th District officers described her as "a ray of light to all of us." Remembering how Aréanah jokingly called them "her aunties," Preston's fellow officers said they lovingly called her "little baby,” whilst considering her wise beyond her years; and
WHEREAS, Officer Preston was consider more than a co-worker, she was a friend; she was resilient, courageous, embodied integrity, and commanding of respect.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Commissioners of Cook County does hereby express our deepest condolences to the family of Officer Preston and to all those whose lives she touched; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this text be spread upon the Official Proceedings of this Honorable Body so that the life of Officer Preston be forever celebrated as a ray of light by those she served.
