PROPOSED RESOLUTION
RESOLUTION CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS
WHEREAS, Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio to Italian immigrants Mario Jos? Bergoglio and Regian Mar?a S?vori on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and
WHEREAS, after graduating as a chemical technician, Pope Francis opted for the path of the priesthood, entering the Diocesan Seminar of Villa Devoto; and
WHEREAS, through a lifetime of devotion, humility, and service, Pope Francis became the 266th pope on March 13, 2013, making him the first Jesuit pope and first pope from the Americas; and
WHEREAS, Pope Francis chose the name Francis in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, himself a man of peace and poverty, who loved and protected creation; and
WHEREAS, Pope Francis lead with unwavering commitment to social justice, care for the poor, environmental stewardship; and
WHEREAS, Pope Francis counseled priests to show mercy and courage, and keep their doors open to everyone; and
WHEREAS, under Pope Francis' leadership, the Catholic Church emphasized inclusivity, and reconciliation, reaching out to refugees, justice involved individuals, and the sick, while calling upon world leaders to uphold human dignity and promote the common good; and
WHEREAS, Pope Francis promoted unity and intersectionality across religious and ideological divides; and
WHEREAS, Pope Francis passed on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 and was laid to rest on April 26, 2025 at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major; and
WHEREAS, Cook County is home to a diverse Catholic community, comprised of nearly 2 million individuals covered by the Archdiocese of Chicago which serves Cook and Lake Counties; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, does hereby honor and celebrate the life and legacy of His Holiness Pope Francis for his vision in a divided world; and
