PROPOSED RESOLUTION
IN HONOR OF THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS CHICAGO ATHLETES BRONZE MEDAL WINNERS IN SOCCER
WHEREAS, the Special Olympics International World Games were held in Los Angeles, California this year from July 25, 2015 through August 1, 2015; and
WHEREAS, four athletes were selected from Chicago to represent the United States of America in the Special Olympics Football (Soccer) competitions; and
WHEREAS, the selected athletes were Keith Tyler, of Kosciuszko Park, and Israel Rivera, Antonio Williams, and Michael Henderson, of Loyola Park; and
WHEREAS, there were several preliminary competitions held throughout the week as they vied for the championship; and
WHEREAS, along with their other teammates, these young men had persevered and gone on to win the Bronze Medal at these Special Olympics International World Games, making not only Chicago proud, but the United States of America as well; and
WHEREAS, their support team back in the city, including their immediate coaches, Jose Herrera, of Loyola Park, and Eileen Guinane, of Kosciuszko Park, under the guidance of the Chicago Park District Special Olympics Manager, Michael Benavente, and with their many family members and friends, were cheering them on back home, and gave them a huge, warm welcome back as they landed at O’Hare International Airport where they were met with signs, pompoms, cowbells, and cheers; and
WHEREAS, Special Olympics was “born in Chicago” in 1968 through the vision of Anne McGlown Burke, now Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke, and grew to be a national and now international phenomenon with programs -in over 170 countries, with the help of Eunice Kennedy and the Kennedy Foundation; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and Board of Commissioners of Cook County does hereby congratulate Keith Tyler, Israel Rivera, Antonio Williams, and Michael Henderson on their tremendous victory as Bronze Medal Winners for the Special Olympics World Games Football (Soccer) competition in 2015; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this text be spread upon the Official Proceedings of this Honorable Body, and a suitable copy of the same be tendered to these great athletes and coaches, in commemoration of this occasion and acknowledgment of their hard work and achievement.
