Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION CREATING A FUNERAL AND CEMETERY VIOLENCE TASKFORCE WHEREAS, violence at funerals across Cook County have reached an unacceptable level, and WHEREAS, celebrating the life of a loved one is an important way to say goodbye for the families, and WHEREAS, all families whose loved ones are killed should be able to mourn their loved ones in peace, and WHEREAS, many Cook County residents bury their loved ones in cemeteries in unincorporated areas of the County, and WHEREAS, in early 2018, shootings and violence at funerals and cemeteries spiked, and WHEREAS, from 2016 to February 2018, more than 1,500 people have been killed in Chicago, so this issue affects many Cook County residents, and WHEREAS, the County should direct any and all available resources to fight the scourge of retaliatory shootings at funerals, funeral processions, and cemeteries, and WHEREAS, Cook County shall create a Task Force to meet and discuss potential solutions to this problem. CREATING A FUNERAL AND CEMETERY VIOLENCE TASKFORCE

 

WHEREAS, violence at funerals across Cook County have reached an unacceptable level, and

 

WHEREAS, celebrating the life of a loved one is an important way to say goodbye for the families, and

 

WHEREAS, all families whose loved ones are killed should be able to mourn their loved ones in peace, and

 

WHEREAS, many Cook County residents bury their loved ones in cemeteries in unincorporated areas of the County, and

 

WHEREAS, in early 2018, shootings and violence at funerals and cemeteries spiked, and

 

WHEREAS, from 2016 to February 2018, more than 1,500 people have been killed in Chicago, so this issue affects many Cook County residents, and

 

WHEREAS, the County should direct any and all available resources to fight the scourge of retaliatory shootings at funerals, funeral processions, and cemeteries, and

 

WHEREAS, Cook County shall create a Task Force to meet and discuss potential solutions to this problem.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, that there be established a Task Force to explore the issues and offer recommendations surrounding retaliatory funeral shootings, and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, by the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners that the Task Force created herein shall consist of seven members, appointed in the following manner:

 

(1) A designee of the Cook County Sheriff shall chair the Task Force

(2) A designee of the Cook County State’s Attorney

(3) A designee of the Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department

(4) A designee of the West Suburban Chiefs of Police

(5) A designee of the South Suburban Chiefs of Police

(6) A member of the Cook County Funeral Directors Association

(7) A cemetery owner
