RECOGNIZING BRENETTA HOWELL BARRETT FOR HER 85TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

 

WHEREAS, Brenetta Howell Barrett was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She is a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother and a surrogate mother to many, and;

 

WHEREAS, Brenetta Howell Barrett worked in many capacities, paid and unpaid, to promote the causes of human/civil rights and civil liberties, and;

 

WHEREAS, Brenetta Howell Barrett served as an advisor, officer, or board member for a broad range of organizations and institutions, such as Third Unitarian Church of Chicago, Third World Conference Foundation, Chicago Focus, Path Press, Introspect Youth Services, Chicago Forum, Illinois Chapter, American Civil Liberties Union, and the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, and;

 

WHEREAS, Brenetta Howell Barrett previously served as Vice President, and has been a board member of the Chicago Committee to Defend the Bill of Rights for over three decades, and;

 

WHEREAS, Mayor Harold Washington appointed her Commissioner of the Department of Consumer Services, also Chicago’s lead agency for environmental protection, and;

 

WHEREAS, through her lifetime work of advocacy and community organizing Ms. Barrett has implemented an approach that emphasizes empowerment and personal capacity-building as key elements.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the President and Cook County Board of Commissioners to congratulate Brenetta Howell Barrett for her years of service in her community and the sincere appreciation of the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners is extended to Brenetta Howell Barrett for her service to her church and the wider community.
