PROPOSED RESOLUTION
CONGRATULATING ST. JOSEPH HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL COACH GENE PINGATORE ON RECEIVING THE 2018 BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME MORGAN WOOTTEN AWARD
WHEREAS, every year the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame recognizes two outstanding high school coaches, one for boys' and one for girls' basketball, with the Morgan Wooten Award; and
WHEREAS, this prestigious award is named after Morgan Wootten, who served as the Head Coach of DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsvile, Maryland for 46 years and is one of three high school coaches enshrined into the Basketball Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, the 2018 Morgan Wootten Award for Lifetime Achievement for Coaching boy's high school basketball was awarded to the legendary Coach Gene Pingatore from St. Joseph's High School in Westchester, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, throughout his 48-year career at St. Joseph High School, Gene Pingatore has led the Chargers to two Illinois state championships, numerous other tournament championships, and has coached numerous NCAA and professional basketball players, including three notable McDonald's All-Americans: Deryl Cunningham '89, Daryl Thomas '83, and NBA great Isiah Thomas '79; and
WHEREAS, on February 1, 2017 Gene Pingatore earned his 1,000th career win, bringing his overall coaching record to 1,000-353 (.739), and is the 15th boys basketball coach in the United States to have surpassed 1,000 wins; and
WHEREAS, this achievement is a testament to Gene Pingatore's extraordinary leadership and dedication to excellence in athletics, academics, and leadership in our communities;
BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners of Cook County that the Board does hereby offer its congratulations to St. Joseph High School Head Basketball Coach Gene Pingatore on the occasion of receiving the 2018 Morgan Wootten Award; and
