Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION HONORING MUHAMMAD ALI WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay Jr.) was born on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky; and WHEREAS, Cassius Clay burst upon the world scene when he captured a Gold Medal in boxing at the 1960 Olympics in Rome; and WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali heralded a new era of Black pride when he captured the professional World Heavyweight Championship in 1964 and adopted a new name; and WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali was staunch opponent of the Vietnam War and risked liberty and livelihood by refusing induction into the United States Army; and WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali was granted conscientious objector status by the United States Supreme Court after a lengthy legal battle; and WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali is "The Greatest" boxer and fighter of all time, as documented in Richard Durham's biography entitled The Greatest; and WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali is a poet of peace and a precursor of hip-hop and co-founded the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky to share his...

HONORING MUHAMMAD ALI

 

WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay Jr.) was born on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky; and

 

WHEREAS, Cassius Clay burst upon the world scene when he captured a Gold Medal in boxing at the 1960 Olympics in Rome; and

 

WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali heralded a new era of Black pride when he captured the professional World Heavyweight Championship in 1964 and adopted a new name; and

 

WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali was staunch opponent of the Vietnam War and risked liberty and livelihood by refusing induction into the United States Army; and

 

WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali was granted conscientious objector status by the United States Supreme Court after a lengthy legal battle; and

WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali passed on June 3, 2016 at the age of 74; and

 

WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali was a resident of Cook County during his Championship reign; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, recognize January 17, 2018 to be known as Muhammad Ali Service to Others Day in Cook County Illinois; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this text be spread upon the official proceeding of this Honorable Body, and a suitable copy of the same be tendered to Muhammad Ali’s family.
