PROPOSED RESOLUTION
HONORING HIS EMINIMENCE BLASE JOSEPH CARDINAL CUPICH ON THE OCCASION OF HIS ELEVATION TO CARDINAL IN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the Cook County Board of Commissioners that Archbishop Blase Joseph Cupich was elevated to the rank of Cardinal Priest on November 19, 2016 at the Vatican by His Holiness Pope Francis; and
WHEREAS, Blase Joseph Cupich was born in Omaha, Nebraska and attended St. John Vianney Seminary at the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota, from where he obtained his B.A. in Philosophy in 1971. He then studied in Rome at the Pontifical North American College and Pontifical Gregorian University, earning a Bachelor's in Sacred Theology (1974) and a Master of Arts in Theology (1975); and
WHEREAS, Blase Joseph Cupich was ordained to the priesthood in 1975 and served in the Archdiocese of Omaha until 1998; and
WHEREAS, on July 6, 1998, Blase Joseph Cupich was appointed Bishop of Rapid City, South Dakota, by Pope John Paul II; and
WHEREAS, On June 30, 2010, Blase Joseph Cupich was appointed Bishop of Spokane by Pope Benedict XVI; and
WHEREAS, On November 18, 2014, Blase Joseph Cupich was installed as Archbishop of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, On October 9, 2016, Pope Francis announced that Archbishop Blase Joseph Cupich would be elevated to the College of Cardinals on November 19, 2016 and assigned to the titular church of San Bartolomeo all'Isola; and
WHEREAS, since his installation in Chicago, Blase Joseph Cardinal Cupich has led an important archdiocese-wide initiative to consider the significant questions of revitalization and reorganization in the local church to ensure its long term stability and success; and
WHEREAS, Blase Joseph Cardinal Cupich has also worked tirelessly to address many of the significant social and economic issues that affect all the citizens of Cook County and has sought a role for the local Catholic Church in finding solutions to problems that tr...
