PROPOSED RESOLUTION
LEWIS MANILOW, IN MEMORIAM
WHEREAS Almighty God in His infinite wisdom has called Lewis Manilow from our midst, and
WHEREAS Lewis Manilow was the loving husband of Susan (nee Rosenberg), and
WHEREAS Lewis Manilow was the dear father of Karen, David (Mary Kenney) and John (Lynn), and
WHEREAS Lewis Manilow was the devoted stepfather of Edwin (Jennifer Schulze) Eisendrath and John (Jennifer Levin) Eisendrath, and
WHEREAS Lewis Manilow was adored grandfather of 15 grandchildren, and
WHEREAS Lewis Manilow grew up on Chicago's North Side and graduated from Senn High School, and
WHEREAS Lewis Manilow earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois and a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1951, and
WHEREAS Lewis Manilow worked as a Cook County assistant state's attorney at the start of his career and in 1956 was part of a group that launched a small resident theater company at the Studebaker Theatre in the Fine Arts, and
WHEREAS Lewis Manilow began a private law practice centering on development work, and
WHEREAS Lewis Manilow focused on philanthropic, civic and political endeavors and was one of the founding sponsors of Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art and served as the Museum Board's President from 1976 until 1981, and
WHEREAS Lewis Manilow was an active advocate of the Chicago theater scene and was one of the first to propose a "theater row" in the North Loop as a way to reinvigorate the neighborhood. He co-chaired a capital campaign committee that successfully allowed the Goodman Theatre to leave its longtime home at the Art Institute of Chicago and move to a newly constructed complex on Dearborn in the Loop, and
WHEREAS Lewis Manilow was a lifetime trustee of the Art Institute of Chicago, a member of the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy, and served on the boards of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, the Progressive Policy Institute, the Visiting Committee of the Un...
