Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION CELEBRATING THE 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NORTHWEST SIDE HOUSING CENTER WHEREAS, the Northwest Side Housing Center (NWSHC) is a HUD-Certified, community-based, nonprofit organization that engages, educates and empowers the community, through housing counseling, financial education, community organizing, outreach, advocacy and supportive services; and WHEREAS, in 2003, Reverend Christine Schrey saw a need in the community for combating predatory lending practices and worked with local community leaders and the Northwest Neighborhood Federation to create the NWSHC, which they did open in the basement of Christ Lutheran Church. Since then the organization has helped thousands of homeowners stay in their homes, buy their first homes, and help better manage their financial situation; and WHEREAS, the NWSHC has evolved into the lead community agency for Belmont Cragin and, while remaining committed to Rev. Schrey's vision and focus, they provide free community programs...

CELEBRATING THE 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NORTHWEST SIDE HOUSING CENTER

WHEREAS, the Northwest Side Housing Center (NWSHC) is a HUD-Certified, community-based, nonprofit organization that engages, educates and empowers the community, through housing counseling, financial education, community organizing, outreach, advocacy and supportive services; and

WHEREAS, in 2003, Reverend Christine Schrey saw a need in the community for combating predatory lending practices and worked with local community leaders and the Northwest Neighborhood Federation to create the NWSHC, which they did open in the basement of Christ Lutheran Church. Since then the organization has helped thousands of homeowners stay in their homes, buy their first homes, and help better manage their financial situation; and

WHEREAS, the NWSHC has evolved into the lead community agency for Belmont Cragin and, while remaining committed to Rev. Schrey's vision and focus, they provide free community programs and services that include: foreclosure prevention, pre-purchase counseling, first-time homebuyer classes, low-income home energy assistance program, rental counseling, financial education, leadership development, workforce development, business development, and community organizing of youth and older adults; and

WHEREAS, NWSHC organizes "Hoops in the Hood" to provide a fun and safe space for youth and families to gather, seeking to change the narrative of violence, tragedy, and fear to one of forward thinking and optimism and to encourage parents and families to be engaged with their community. "Hoops in the Hood" also addresses the need for on-site support and counseling immediately after a violent incident in the community; and

WHEREAS, On May 3, 2018, the NWSHC will celebrate 15 years of their continued commitment to the community of Belmont Cragin and those in need of affordable housing and supportive services that empower residents to improve their lives and housing for...
