Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION HONORING WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH AND COOK COUNTY'S 2021 UNSUNG HEROINES WHEREAS, March is celebrated and honored as nationally as Women's History Month, and WHEREAS, Women's History Month first came to be as a national celebration in 1987, although the first celebrations, beginning in 1981 lasted only a week; and WHEREAS, Thanks to petitions from the National Women's History Project, which led to the President of the United States in 1987 proclaiming March of every year, Women's History Month to honor the achievements of women; and WHEREAS, Women have led movements for social and economic justice, made groundbreaking scientific discoveries, and enriched our societies with works of art and literature. Today, women are continuing this legacy of leadership as entrepreneurs, doctors, teachers, scientists, lawyers, artists, and public officials. HONORING WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH AND COOK COUNTY'S 2021 UNSUNG HEROINES

WHEREAS, March is celebrated and honored as nationally as Women's History Month, and

WHEREAS, Women's History Month first came to be as a national celebration in 1987, although the first celebrations, beginning in 1981 lasted only a week; and

WHEREAS, Thanks to petitions from the National Women's History Project, which led to the President of the United States in 1987 proclaiming March of every year, Women's History Month to honor the achievements of women; and

WHEREAS, Women have led movements for social and economic justice, made groundbreaking scientific discoveries, and enriched our societies with works of art and literature. Today, women are continuing this legacy of leadership as entrepreneurs, doctors, teachers, scientists, lawyers, artists, and public officials. WHEREAS, Cook County honors the many women who have shaped our history, and celebrates those who make progress in our time. Let us remember that when all residents of Cook County benefit when everyone is treated equitably; and

WHEREAS, the Cook County Commission on Women's Issues annually celebrates the Peggy A. Montes Unsung Heroine Award recognizing 18 women whose contributions to their communities, families and professional endeavors have been so vital, but seldom recognized.
